Ship Basics

What is Ship?

The team at Ship is on a mission to make finding a date more fun and fulfilling by bringing your friends into the experience, so you can share in the crushes, the ghostings, and the situationships together. You don’t even have to be single or “on the market” to use the app.

  • Set up your profile, as either a dater or matchmaker
  • Start matching for yourself or for your friends
  • Chat about prospects
  • Scope out each other’s dating activity
  • Catch yourself actually enjoying a dating app

Is Ship free?

Absolutely! You can download the Ship app for iOS or Android and start using it right away.

What is the minimum age requirement?

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account on Ship.

Where is Ship available?

We’re currently available in US, Canada, UK, Brazil and Australia, but we have plans to expand to more countries very soon!

Signing Up and Getting Started

How do I create a Ship account?

Ship requires that all users verify their accounts with a mobile phone number. We have this requirement in place to ensure the safety and security of your account.

  • Download the Ship app for iOS or Android.
  • Tap I’m single or I’m not single.
  • Fill out your profile info.
  • Allow Ship access to all required permissions.
  • Start finding matches for yourself or playing matchmaker for your friends.

Do I have to be single to create an account on Ship?

You definitely don’t have to be single to join in on the fun! Download Ship and select “I’m not single” to create an account and start finding matches for your single friends (you won’t even have to upload a photo).

How do I edit my dating profile?

  • Tap on your avatar in the top left corner.
  • Tap Edit Profile.
  • Tap into the section in your profile you’d like to edit and make your changes.
  • Tap the x in the top left to save your changes.

How do I set my search preferences?

To update who will appear to you and your friends in Discover:

  • Tap on your avatar in the top left corner.
  • Go to Preferences and tap into any section to update your filters.
  • Go back to Discover to start swiping on profiles.

Adding Friends

How do I add friends on Ship?

  • Navigate to the Friends tab (second from the left).
  • Tap on the ‘Add Friends’ icon in the top right corner.
  • Add your friends that are already on Ship by tapping Add next to their name.
  • You will see a confirmation that the request was sent successfully. If you’re single, friends will be granted permission to match for you by default, but you can revoke this permission by switching the permission toggle off on the confirmation or from the Permissions page.

Why would I add friends on Ship?

We built Ship because we noticed that community – an integral part of dating IRL – was missing from dating apps. On Ship, your friends can vet prospects for you, find you matches, chat about profiles with you, and even help you craft the perfect pick-up line.

Can I add friends that are in a relationship or aren’t looking to date themselves?

Absolutely! We want to include your friends regardless of their relationship status – you can invite your single or taken friends to download Ship and help you find matches.

What permissions can I give friends?

You have full control over which of your friends can find you matches on Ship. You can also control which friends are notified about your dating activity in the feed, including when someone vets prospects for you, when you get a match, and when you DM a match. All of these settings can be managed on the Permissions page.

To manage your permissions:

  • Tap your profile avatar in the top left.
  • Tap on Permissions.

What happens when I give a friend the permission to match for me?

When you give your friend permission to match for you, they will be shown prospects that meet your search preferences on Discover. Your friend will be able to like prospects on your behalf and match you with compatible members on Ship. You’ll be notified of all activity your friends do on your behalf on the activity feed (lightning bolt in bottom navigation bar).

What happens when I take away a friend’s permission to match for me?

If you take away a friend’s permission to match for you, they will no longer be able to vet prospects for you. Your friend will not be notified of this change, but your name will disappear from their “Matching for” options on Discover. You will still be able to message any matches they made for you before you took away that permission.

Will friends be notified if I give or take away permissions?

Your friends will only be notified if you give them permission to match for you – we won’t tell them if you take away any permissions!

What happens if I unfriend someone or if a friend deletes their account?

If you unfriend someone:

  • You will no longer be able to match for one another or see each other’s activity (past or future).
  • You won’t be able to send them direct messages, but you’ll still be able to communicate through any group chats that you are both a part of.

If your friend deletes their account:

  • Any activity they performed on your behalf will remain in your feed, but your friend’s profile will have been removed. If your friend was single, their dating activity will disappear entirely from your feed.
  • You won’t be able to see your direct messages with them anymore, but you’ll still see anonymized messages they had sent to group chats that you were both members of.
